Dioma evaluates your level through your actual practice rather than through a separate placement test. From your first session, the system analyzes your performance across grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction to determine your CEFR level.
This approach provides more accurate placement than a static test because it observes how you perform across multiple exercise types and contexts, not just how you answer isolated questions.
How Dioma determines your level:
Initial placement (first 20 minutes across 3 sessions)
You start by self-selecting your approximate level during onboarding. Dioma then presents exercises slightly above and below that level to confirm your actual proficiency. The system tracks:
Grammar accuracy across different structures
Vocabulary range and appropriateness
Sentence complexity and coherence
Error patterns that indicate specific weaknesses
After approximately 20 minutes of active practice, Dioma recalibrates your level based on observed performance.
Ongoing re-leveling (weekly)
Your level is re-evaluated every seven days based on cumulative performance data. If you're consistently performing above your assigned level, the system moves you up. If you're struggling with level-appropriate content, it adjusts downward to ensure you're working at the right difficulty.
Why this works better than a placement test:
Traditional placement tests have limitations:
Snapshot accuracy - They measure performance at a single moment, often affected by test anxiety or unfamiliar question formats
Limited scope - They typically test recognition (multiple choice) rather than production (speaking and writing)
No context - A 20-question quiz can't capture the nuance of how you perform across different grammar topics, registers, or communication contexts
Dioma's embedded assessment provides:
Production-based evaluation - You demonstrate what you can actually produce, not what you can recognize
Pattern recognition - The system identifies specific grammar weaknesses and vocabulary gaps, not just an overall score
Adaptive refinement - Your level adjusts as you improve, rather than remaining fixed from a single test
If you disagree with your placement:
During your first three sessions, the system is actively calibrating. If exercises feel consistently too easy or too hard, continue practicing, the algorithm needs data from multiple contexts to place you accurately.
After the initial calibration period, if you still feel misplaced:
Check your performance dashboard to see where your accuracy sits
Email help@dioma.com with specific examples of exercises that feel off—this helps us identify if there's a curriculum issue or if the leveling needs manual adjustment
What about formal level certification?
Dioma does not issue official CEFR certificates. Our level assignments are for instructional purposes and help structure your curriculum. If you need formal certification for academic or professional purposes, you'll need to take an official exam (DELE for Spanish, DELF/DALF for French, etc.).
